A Maytag water softener swaps the minerals that make water hard for sodium or potassium, using a tank of resin, a control valve and a brine tank filled with salt. The control decides when to regenerate, flushing the resin with brine to restore it.
Houston-area water varies from one neighborhood to the next, and well water often carries iron or sediment that fouls resin and valves. Humid garages and utility closets can also cause salt to cake and corrode controls.

Why is my softened water hard again?
The tank may be out of salt, the salt may have formed a bridge, or the control may have missed its regeneration. We check each, then the resin and valve. Hardness varies from week to week, so we also ask when you first noticed it.
What is a salt bridge?
A hard crust that forms above the water in the brine tank, leaving a gap beneath so no brine is made. Breaking it up often helps for a while, and we look for the cause, such as humidity or the wrong salt type.
