What ERR means

ERR on a Maytag electric or gas dryer with an electronic control appears when the door has not been completely closed and latched. The dryer will not run unless the door is closed. A door can look shut and still not be latched, and some models have an upper and a lower latch where both must be secure for the dryer to run. You see ERR in the display and the drum stays still when you press Start.

Common causes of ERR

  • Door not fully closed or latched
  • One of two latches not engaged
  • Clothing caught at the door edge
  • Door switch or latch not registering
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Push firmly on the door to engage the latch or latches. 2. If your model has an upper and a lower latch, make sure both are secure. 3. Check that no clothing is caught at the edge. 4. Turn the dryer's breaker off for 5 minutes, then back on, and try Start again.

  • If the door is plainly latched and ERR remains, the latch or switch may not be reporting closed

  • We try the latch by hand and with a meter, so you know whether it is the door or the switch

The door looks closed. Why do I still get ERR?

A door can sit shut without engaging its latch. Pushing firmly until you feel it catch is the first step, and on two-latch models both must catch.

Does ERR mean the dryer is broken?

Usually not. The dryer refuses to run for safety until the door is latched. It is a repair only when a latched door still shows ERR.

Can I bypass the door switch?

No, and we do not recommend it. The switch stops the drum when the door opens. If it is not working, we test it and replace it properly.
