A Maytag dryer that does nothing when you press start is either not getting power, not seeing the door as closed or not receiving the start signal. The checks below take a few minutes.
Is It Getting Power?
- Electric dryers use a double breaker. Switch it fully off and on, even if it looks fine.
- Check that the plug is seated all the way and the cord is not bent sharply behind the machine.
- If the display lights but the drum does not move, the problem is further in.
Does It See the Door Closed?
Open and close the door firmly and listen for the latch. With the door open, press the door switch by hand if you can see it. A click or a hum suggests it works. Silence suggests the switch or its wiring has failed.
Is Something Holding the Start?
- Make sure a cycle is selected and not left between two settings.
- Look for a child lock or hold feature if your model has one.
- Hold the start button a full second or two instead of tapping it.
What Needs a Meter
Thermal fuses, start switches, drive motors and the control board all produce the same silence. We test each with a meter rather than replacing parts one after another. Opening the electrical panel on a dryer is not an owner job.
What Not to Do
Do not bypass the door switch or the start switch. Those exist to keep the drum from turning while it is open. If a breaker keeps tripping when you reset it, leave it off.
