Smell of Gas Near a Maytag Gas Dryer: What to Do First

A gas smell near a dryer needs a calm, fixed order of actions. Here is what to do, what not to do, and what happens after.

If you smell gas near a Maytag gas dryer, the first priority is getting everyone out and avoiding anything that can spark. The dryer is a possible source, but the smell may also come from the line, the shutoff valve or something else in the house, and you cannot tell which from the smell.

Do This Immediately

  1. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off, and do not use a phone near the smell.
  2. Leave the house with everyone, including pets.
  3. From outside, call the gas utility emergency number, and 911 if the smell is strong.
  4. Do not go back in until you are told it is safe.

What Happens After

The gas company checks the line and meter. If the leak is in the supply pipe or the shutoff, a plumber or the gas utility fixes it. If the dryer is the source, such as a burner valve or a connection, we repair the appliance once the line is declared safe.

What We Do Not Do

We do not run gas lines or relocate dryers that need a plumber. New connections and extensions go to a plumber.

A Brief Odor at Startup

A faint odor in the first moments after the burner lights can be normal, but it should fade within seconds. A smell that lingers, or one you notice when the dryer is off, is not normal and should be treated as above.

Keep the area around the dryer clear and never store paint, solvents or cleaners beside a gas appliance. Their fumes can be mistaken for a gas leak, and they can ignite.

Work on a gas dryer through Maytag dryer repair starts only after the gas supply is confirmed safe. Call us once the utility has cleared the house.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
