What AF or F4E3 or Check Vent means
On Maytag electric and gas dryers with an electronic control, Check Vent, AF and F4E3 all concern airflow. The Check Vent light, available for automatic cycles on certain models, reports the status of airflow through the dryer and its vent for the life of the dryer. If it comes on during the sensing phase, a blocked vent or low airflow was detected. F4E3 is the restricted air flow code: the lint screen or vent is clogged, crushed, kinked or has too many turns, and the dryer keeps running with the error showing.
Common causes of AF or F4E3 or Check Vent
- Lint screen clogged
- Vent line clogged, crushed or kinked
- Vent run with too many turns
- Outside vent hood blocked
- Airflow sensing, once the vent is clear
1. Pull out the lint screen and clean it, then rinse it if it has a film. 2. Check the vent hose behind the dryer for crushing or kinks. 3. Clear the outside vent hood of lint and debris. 4. Run an automatic cycle again and watch whether the Check Vent light or F4E3 returns.
- A blocked vent is the most common reason, but a clear vent with a code left points to the airflow sensing
- We check airflow at the outside hood and test the sensor
- A clear vent with the warning still on points at the sensing parts, which we check with an airflow test
Other Dryer codes
Is a Check Vent light a fire risk?
A clogged vent holds heat and lint inside the dryer, so it should be cleared promptly. Even though the dryer keeps running, stop using it until the vent is clear.
How do I know if my vent run is too long?
A vent with many turns or a long path restricts airflow even when clean. We measure what the dryer actually gets and tell you what would improve it.
The code came back after I cleaned the vent. Now what?
Then the vent may not be the whole story. We check airflow at the hood and test the sensing parts, using your cleaned vent as the starting point.
