What AF means
An AF code on a Maytag Commercial-Grade Residential dryer stands for restricted airflow. The control is telling you that air is not leaving the dryer freely, usually because the lint screen is packed, or the vent run is crushed, kinked, or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running while the code is showing, so you may notice only longer drying times, hot clothes that stay damp, and a warm laundry room. Touching any key clears the code and returns the display to the time remaining.
Common causes of AF
- Lint screen coated with a film or packed with lint
- Vent hose crushed or kinked behind the dryer
- Long vent run or too many elbows between the dryer and the outside
- Outside vent hood flap stuck or clogged
1. Touch any key to clear the code from the display. 2. Pull out the lint screen and clean it, including the housing it sits in. 3. Look behind the dryer for a crushed or kinked vent hose and straighten it. 4. Check the outside vent hood for lint and make sure the flap opens freely. 5. Run a timed dry cycle and see whether AF returns.
- If the code returns with a clean screen and a clear hose, the restriction may be deeper in the duct or inside the dryer
- We check airflow through the full vent run, not only the part you can see
- A long or heavily bent vent can be a layout problem rather than a failed part, and we tell you plainly which it is

Is it safe to keep using the dryer with AF showing?
The dryer keeps running, but restricted airflow makes it run hot and wastes energy. Lint builds up in the duct as well, so clean the screen and vent soon rather than ignoring the code.
Why did AF appear after I cleaned the lint screen?
A clean screen only covers one part of the path. The hose behind the dryer, the wall duct, and the outside hood can all hold lint, so the restriction may sit further along.
Can you clean the vent run?
We can check the airflow and tell you where the restriction is. If the repair is a ducting problem, we explain it first and give you a written price before we start.
Still seeing AF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
