What L2 means
An L2 code on a Maytag Commercial-Grade Residential dryer is a low or no line voltage alert. It points to the home power supply keeping the heater from turning on, so the dryer keeps running but the air may not warm up and loads take much longer. Touching any pad clears the code and returns the display to the time remaining. The first things to look at are a blown household fuse and a tripped circuit breaker, because an electric dryer needs full voltage to heat.
Common causes of L2
- Blown household fuse on the dryer circuit
- Tripped or partly tripped breaker
- Loose connection at the dryer's power cord or terminals
- Weak supply from the panel
1. Touch any pad to clear the code from the display. 2. Check the fuses and breakers for the dryer circuit; reset a tripped breaker once. 3. Make sure the breaker handle is fully on. 4. Run a timed dry cycle and see whether the air becomes warm. 5. If L2 returns, stop using the dryer and call us.
- If the panel is fine, the problem may be at the dryer's terminal block or in the heater circuit
- We measure voltage on both legs to see where the loss occurs
- If the supply is the cause, we say plainly that an electrician may be needed
Other Commercial Laundry codes
Why does the dryer run with L2 showing?
The motor can run on a smaller part of the supply than the heater needs. So the drum turns but the heat stays off, and the code reports the missing voltage.
Will resetting the breaker fix it?
If the breaker had tripped, one reset can restore heat. If L2 returns or the breaker trips again, the circuit or the dryer has a problem we need to test.
Is L2 always an electrical problem in the house?
Often it is, but not always. A loose connection at the dryer can look the same, which is why we measure on both sides before deciding.
