What 3E means

3E is a motor code on the Maytag Neptune 27-inch front-load washers, the MAH8700A and MAH9700AW families, from about 2005 to 2006 production. The control detected too much current while driving the motor, and the motor will not turn. Think of it as the washer protecting itself when something is dragging, jammed or shorted in the drive. These older Neptune washers are still common. The display shows 3E and the drum stays still or stops during the cycle.

Common causes of 3E

  • Drum or motor that is hard to turn
  • Motor winding or its wiring drawing too much current
  • Motor control board driving the motor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Stop the cycle, unplug the washer and wait for the drum to be still. 2. Remove part of the load if it is very large or heavy. 3. Check that nothing is wedged between the drum and the door seal. 4. Plug the washer in and run a short drain and spin. 5. If 3E returns, leave it unplugged and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Overcurrent can come from a mechanical drag or an electrical problem, and the two look the same on the display.
  • We turn the drum by hand with the power off and then test the motor and its wiring.
  • This is an older model we repair, and we tell you if it is not worth it.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
3E3E questions
Is 3E the same as a stuck drum?

It can be. The control saw too much current and gave up on the motor. A jammed or overloaded drum is one reason, but the motor and drive can cause it too.

Should I keep trying cycles?

No. Repeated tries stress the motor and its control. Run one short test after removing some load, stop if the code returns, and leave the washer unplugged until we have looked.

Will you quote before repairing?

Always. You get a written price before we begin any work, and a 30-day workmanship warranty on the repair we do, so there are no surprises on the bill.
