What PF means

PF stands for power failure, and it appears on both Maytag front-load HE washers, such as the MHW5630HW, and top-load HE washers with electronic control, such as the MVW6230HW. It means the power went out, or was cut, while the washer was working. The washer is fine in most cases; the cycle was simply interrupted. On the front-loader some models let you press Start to finish the cycle, while others need Cancel and a fresh start. On the top-loader, a held Start restarts it.

Common causes of PF

  • A house power outage or tripped breaker during the cycle
  • A plug that was pulled or loose in the outlet
  • Repeated PF with steady power, which points to the washer's own power supply
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check that the washer is plugged in firmly and the breaker is on. 2. Front-load: press Start to see whether the cycle resumes; if not, press Cancel and start over. 3. Top-load: touch and hold START to restart the cycle, or press POWER to clear the display. 4. Watch the next cycle to confirm it runs through.

! Why to stop there
  • PF with steady house power suggests a loose connection or a failing power supply inside the washer
  • We check the outlet, the cord and the power feed to the control
  • The price is written down before work, and we say plainly if an older washer is not worth repairing
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
PFPF questions
Does PF mean my washer is broken?

Usually not. It means the cycle was interrupted by a power failure. After power returns, you restart or resume the cycle, and the washer should carry on as it did before.

How do I restart after PF?

On front-loaders some models let Start finish the cycle, others need Cancel. On top-loaders, touch and hold START, or press POWER to clear the display.

What if PF appears with no outage?

Then the washer or its power feed needs testing, since something inside may be dropping out. We give a written price first, and our repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.
