What dL means
The code dL means different things on two Maytag washers. On the Neptune 27-inch front-load washers, the MAH8700A and MAH9700AW families built around 2005 and 2006, the control saw the door lock switch read open while the motor was running. On older Maytag Bravos top-load HE washers, dL means the lid cannot lock, often because an item is caught in the lid and keeps it from closing. Both are older washers still in many homes.
Common causes of dL
- Items caught in the lid or door area (Bravos)
- Door or lid lock switch reading open when it should be closed
- Latch alignment or wiring to the lock
1. Stop the washer and check for clothing caught in the door or lid. 2. On a Bravos top-load washer, press Pause/Cancel once to clear the code. 3. Close the door or lid firmly. 4. Start a short cycle. 5. If dL comes back, stop using the washer and call us.
- A door or lid that closes cleanly but still shows dL points to the lock switch or the latch, and we test them.
- These are older washers we repair, and we tell you plainly if a repair is not worth it.

Other Washer codes
Is dL the same on my Neptune and my Bravos?
The letters match, but the models differ. On the Neptune front-loader it concerns the door lock switch reading open during a run. On the Bravos it means the lid will not lock.
What does Pause/Cancel do?
On a Bravos top-load washer, pressing it once clears the code after you remove whatever blocks the lid. Then you can start the cycle again.
Is it safe to use the washer with dL?
If the lock keeps failing, stop. A door that does not lock properly should not run through a spin, so wait for us to check it.
Still seeing dL?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
