What F02 means

An F02 on an older Maytag front-loading automatic washer with a HOLD TO START control means the washer could not drain the water in the expected time. The cycle stops with water still sitting in the tub, and clothes come out soaked. The usual suspects are outside the machine: a kinked, frozen or clogged drain hose, or a drain set more than 96 inches (2.4 m) above the floor. This is an older platform that is still in many homes, and we repair it, and we say plainly when a repair is not worth it.

Common causes of F02

  • A kinked, crushed, frozen or clogged drain hose
  • A drain standpipe or hose outlet set higher than 96 inches (2.4 m) above the floor
  • The drain pump and its inlet, if the hose and standpipe are clear
  • The wiring that feeds the pump
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Press PAUSE/OFF twice to cancel the cycle. 2. Unplug the washer or disconnect power. 3. Check the drain hose for kinks, ice or clogs, and check that it is not more than 96 inches (2.4 m) above the floor. 4. Plug the washer back in, select the cycle again and press HOLD TO START.

! Why to stop there
  • If the hose and height are fine, the water still has to leave the drum, so we test the drain pump and its path
  • A pump can be partly blocked by small items from the wash, which only shows once the pump is reached
  • We tell you plainly if the age of the washer makes a pump repair a poor investment
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F02F02 questions
What does F02 mean on my older Maytag front-loader?

It is a drain problem. The washer did not empty the tub in time, so it stopped the cycle. Water is usually left inside, and the first things to check are the drain hose and its height.

How high can the drain hose be?

Not more than 96 inches (2.4 m) above the floor. A hose set higher than that, or one that is kinked, frozen or clogged, can trigger F02 even when the pump itself is fine.

What if the code returns after I fix the hose?

Then we look at the drain pump and its connections. We give you a written price first, we say plainly if the repair is not worth it on a washer this age, and our work carries a 30-day warranty.
