What F0E1 or rL means

F0E1 and rL appear on Maytag front-load HE washers, the MHW models such as the MHW5630HW, MHW6630HC, MHW8630HC and MHW3505FW. The Clean Washer cycle was started, but the washer senses a load inside the drum. On some displays the same message shows as rL or F-34. Nothing is broken in the usual case: the cycle refuses to run a cleaning pass with laundry in the tub. You will see the code right after pressing start, and the cycle does not begin.

Common causes of F0E1 or rL

Laundry or a small item left in the drum when Clean Washer was started
A sock or cloth caught in the door seal fold
The load-sensing path, if the drum is truly empty and the code stays
