What F20 means

F20 on a Maytag front-load HE washer, the MHW models such as the MHW5630HW and MHW3505FW, is a water inlet problem. The washer is getting no water or too little, so the cycle cannot keep filling the drum. The manufacturer's checks all sit outside the machine: both faucets fully open, the inlet screens free of debris, and the inlet hoses without kinks. You will see the code during fill, usually with a drum that stays dry or only partly filled.

Common causes of F20

  • A hot or cold faucet that is not fully open
  • Clogged screens at the inlet hoses
  • Kinked or crushed inlet hoses
  • The inlet valves, once the supply side checks out
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open both the hot and cold faucets all the way. 2. Look along each inlet hose for kinks. 3. Shut the faucets, then check the inlet screens at the hose ends for debris and rinse them. 4. Disconnect power for 5 minutes, restore it and start the cycle again.

! Why to stop there
  • If the supply and screens are clean, the inlet valves are the next circuit to test
  • Low house water pressure can look the same, so we check that too
  • If the washer is an older MHW, we tell you plainly if a repair is not worth it
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F20F20 questions
What does F20 mean on a Maytag front-loader?

It means a water inlet problem: no water, or not enough. The first checks are both faucets, the inlet screens and the hoses, since all of them can be looked at without opening the washer.

How do I check the inlet screens?

Turn off both faucets, unscrew the hoses from the back of the washer and look at the screens at the hose ends. Rinse out any debris, and put the hoses back hand-tight with the washers seated. Do not force anything.

What if it still says F20?

We test the inlet valves and the water supply at the washer. We give you a written price before any work starts, and our repairs carry a 30-day warranty.
