What F5E2 means

F5E2 means the washer cannot lock its door or lid. On Maytag front-load HE washers (MHW models such as the MHW6630HC), the door is not locking properly, and it can look closed without being latched. On Maytag top-load HE washers (such as the MVWC565FW), including the older Bravos era, the lid lock cannot engage, usually because something sits in the lid lock area. You will find the cycle stopped or never started.

Common causes of F5E2

  • A door that looks shut but is not latched (front-loaders)
  • An item or laundry sticking out beyond the door
  • An obstruction in the lid lock area (top-loaders)
  • The lock mechanism, once the area is clear
✓ One safe check you can try

1. On a front-loader, open the door and close it firmly. 2. Check for laundry sticking out beyond the door opening before you close it. 3. On a top-loader, check the lid lock area and remove any objects or clothing from it. 4. Start the cycle again.

! Why to stop there
  • A clear lock area that will still not engage means the lock itself is next to test
  • We check the door or lid alignment as well as the lock
  • On an older Bravos we check value as well as the problem, and report back honestly
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F5E2F5E2 questions
What does F5E2 mean?

The washer cannot lock the door or lid. On a front-loader the door may look closed but not be latched. On a top-loader, an object in the lid lock area is the usual cause.

What should I look for on a top-loader?

Look around the lid lock area for objects, and make sure no clothing is in the way. Then close the lid and start the cycle again.

When do I need a repair?

When the door or lid is clear and the code stays. We test the lock, quote in writing first, and give a 30-day warranty on repairs.
