What FL means
FL belongs to the Maytag Neptune 27-inch front-load washers, the MAH8700A and MAH9700AW series. It means the door failed to lock after three attempts. A front-loader will not fill or run until the door is latched and locked, so the washer stops before the wash starts, or partway through. Neptunes are an older design that Houston households still run today, and we repair them.
Common causes of FL
- Laundry or a sleeve caught in the door opening
- A door that is not closing squarely against the latch
- The door lock assembly and its wiring
- The control board, if the lock tests good
1. Press the power button to cancel the cycle, then open the door. 2. Check the door opening and rubber seal for clothing that stops the door from closing. 3. Close the door firmly until you hear it latch. 4. Start the cycle again. 5. If FL returns, stop using the washer so it does not keep trying the lock.
- The code says the lock did not engage; it does not say whether the latch, the lock or the control is the cause
- We test the door lock circuit directly, which cannot be done from outside the cabinet
- Neptunes are older machines we do repair; if the numbers do not add up we will say so, and the price is in writing first
Other Washer codes
What does FL mean on a Neptune washer?
The door failed to lock after three attempts. A front-loader will not run a cycle with a door it cannot lock, so the washer stops and shows FL until the door problem is dealt with.
Is my Neptune too old to repair?
Not automatically. Plenty of Neptunes are still running in Houston, and we repair them. When the cost outweighs what the washer is worth, we tell you so directly.
Could a stuck sock cause FL?
Yes, anything between the door and the seal can keep it from latching. Clear the opening first. If the code remains, the lock needs testing.
