What HC means
HC is a hose message on two generations of Maytag top-load HE washers. On models with electronic control, from the Bravos X and Bravos XL era through current MVW models such as the MVW6230HW, the code appears at the end of the cycle and says the hot and cold inlet hoses are installed incorrectly: the cold hose is on the hot inlet and the hot hose is on the cold inlet. The older Bravos MVWB series, such as the MVWB765FW, shows HC for the same reason. Those Bravos washers are an older platform that remains in many homes, and we repair them. We also say so plainly when a repair would not be worth the money.
Common causes of HC
- Hoses connected to the wrong inlets, usually from the original installation or a move
- Hose connections swapped after a service visit or a plumbing change
1. Turn off the water supply to the washer. 2. Compare each hose with its inlet. The hot hose belongs on the hot inlet and the cold hose on the cold inlet. 3. Swap the hoses if they are crossed, and hand-tighten the connections. 4. Turn the water back on and check for drips. 5. Run a cycle to confirm HC does not return.
- If the hoses are correct and HC persists, the temperature sensing needs testing
- Wet or dripping connections get checked for leaks before we leave
- We quote in writing first, and the repair carries a 30-day workmanship warranty
Other Washer codes
Why does HC show up only at the end of my cycle?
The washer reports it at the end of the wash cycle, not at the start. That is the point where it tells you the cold hose sits on the hot inlet and the hot hose on the cold inlet.
Does HC mean the washer is damaged?
Reversed hoses mean the water temperature is not what you chose. Correct them so washes behave as selected, and turn the water off before you swap the hoses.
Is it the same on the older Bravos washers?
Yes. The older Bravos guide also shows HC at the end of the wash cycle for switched hot and cold hoses. Same fix: shut off the water, swap the hoses and test with a cycle.
Still unsure about HC?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
