What ES or E5 means
ES, or in some displays E5, is not an error. On Maytag electric and gas freestanding and slide-in ranges with the feature, such as the MER8850DS, it means Energy Save mode is on. The control and clock go into a sleep state that turns the display off when the range is idle, which cuts power use. When the range sits unused for five minutes with only the time showing, the letters ES followed by On appear twice. Owners often mistake the dark display for a dead control.
Common causes of ES or E5
- Energy Save mode working as designed on models that have it
- Setting left on after the control was adjusted
1. Read the display: if it shows ES followed by On, the range is simply idle in Energy Save. 2. Check your owner's manual or control guide for how your model wakes the display or turns the feature off. 3. Try a normal bake or cooktop use to confirm the range responds. 4. If the range will not respond at all, switch the breaker off for one minute and back on.
- If the display stays dark when you use the range, the cause is something other than Energy Save.
- We then check control power and keypad response before any repair, and give you the price first.

Is ES a problem I need fixed?
No. It reports that Energy Save is active. The range is waiting, not failing. Your guide explains how your model handles the setting, and nothing needs repair if the oven then heats normally.
Why does my display go dark?
Energy Save puts the control and clock to sleep when the range is not in use, which saves a small amount of power. The display lights up again when you use the range.
What if the range does not respond at all?
Then it is not just Energy Save. A power reset at the breaker is the first step. If it still does nothing, we test control power and the keypad.
