What F8 means

F8 is a short code on Maytag electric and gas ranges with a meat probe, such as the MER8850DS. It asks you to make sure the probe is firmly in the probe receptacle, which sits in different places depending on the model. The control is reporting that it does not see a proper connection. Owners find the code when they start a probe-assisted cook or when the oven starts, and the cycle may not begin until the code is dealt with.

Common causes of F8

  • Probe plug seated only part way
  • Probe wire or plug worn
  • Receptacle contact or wiring
  • Probe input on the control
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Make sure the oven is cool, then push the meat probe firmly and fully into its receptacle. 2. Take the probe out if you are cooking without it. 3. Switch the range's breaker off for one minute and back on. 4. Look for the code again after a minute. 5. Verify oven operation with a plain bake.

! Why to stop there
  • When the code stays with the probe out, the receptacle, wiring or control input is what remains.
  • We test the receptacle with a known good probe so you are not billed for a part that was working.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F8F8 questions
Why do I see F8 with no probe in the oven?

The control still checks the probe circuit. A dirty or damaged receptacle, or a wiring or control issue, can look like a missing probe even when you are not using one.

Where do I find the receptacle?

It is inside the oven cavity, often on a side wall near the front. The exact place depends on your model, and your use and care guide shows it.

Is F8 an emergency?

No. It is one of the lower-risk codes, and ordinary baking without the probe is usually fine once the code clears. Call us if it keeps returning.
