What Feature Not Available or Fault Detected means
Owners of certain Maytag ranges, among them the electric MER8650ES, may see the control scroll the message Feature Not Available across the display, sometimes paired with a note that a problem was detected. It appears when the control hits a problem while you are programming a cook cycle. The display also suggests either PRESS ENTER TO TRY AGAIN or DISABLE POWER TO CLEAR. The message is a general alert rather than a specific part, so the cycle you tried to set does not start and the control waits for you to retry or reset.
Common causes of Feature Not Available or Fault Detected
- Control that could not accept the programmed cook cycle
- Brief power disturbance during programming
- Oven control or its wiring if the message keeps returning
1. Read the display and follow it: press Enter if it says to try again. 2. If it says to disable power, go to the breaker panel and shut off the range's breaker for sixty seconds. 3. Restore the breaker. 4. Begin a bake cycle and stay near the range for a minute. 5. If the message comes back, write down which cycle you were setting.
- A message that repeats on different cycles points to the control or wiring, and a retry cannot separate the two.
- We test the control and its connections before suggesting a board.
- We give you a written price first, and our repair carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.

Should I press Enter or cut the power?
Do what the display says. If it offers to try again, press Enter first. If it asks you to disable power, cut power at the breaker for a minute and then restore it.
Does this message always mean a repair is needed?
No. A single occurrence after a power flicker often clears with a reset. A message that comes back on every cycle suggests the control, and that is when we should look.
Is the oven safe to use?
If the oven heats normally after the reset and no further message appears, it can be used. If it will not run a cycle, leave it off and call us.
