What Lo or Pre means
When you turn on the oven of a Maytag electric or gas freestanding or slide-in range, such as the MER7662WS0, the display may read Lo or Pre. This is normal. Lo shows that the oven temperature is low, below 170 degrees F, and Pre shows that the oven is preheating. On some models the display switches to the actual temperature once it passes 170 degrees F and then climbs in steps of five degrees. A tone sounds when the set temperature is reached.
Common causes of Lo or Pre
- Normal preheating after the oven was turned on
- Oven temperature still below the display's starting point
- Preheat taking unusually long if the oven is not heating at all
1. Leave the door closed and let the oven preheat. 2. Wait for the display to show the temperature rising. 3. Listen for the tone that signals the set temperature. 4. If Lo or Pre never changes after a long time, turn the oven off and cool it. 5. Switch the range's breaker off for one minute, back on, and try again.
- If the oven never leaves Lo or Pre and does not warm, we check the sensor, element and control to find where heat is lost.
- A display that reads normally is not a repair.
- We quote in writing before any work.

Is Lo an error?
No. It simply tells you the oven is cooler than 170 degrees F. Once the oven heats past that point, many models show the real temperature in the display.
How long does Pre last?
Until the oven reaches the temperature you set, when a tone sounds. The time depends on the setting. If it seems endless and the oven feels cold, there may be a heating problem.
When should I call you?
If the oven stays on Pre with no heat, or the display never shows rising temperature, we should look. Otherwise nothing is wrong and no repair is needed.
