What Probe or Insert Probe means

A Maytag electric or gas freestanding or slide-in range with a meat probe, such as the MER8850DS, shows Probe or Insert Probe when the control is looking for a signal from the probe and does not get one. The oven cannot read food temperature until the probe is detected. Most often the probe is not fully seated in its jack inside the oven, or it has not been placed in the food. The cycle will not follow the probe until the signal appears.

Common causes of Probe or Insert Probe

  • Probe not pushed fully into the jack
  • Probe not inserted in the food
  • Probe or its jack that is not passing a signal
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Let the oven cool before reaching in. 2. Push the probe plug fully into the probe jack. 3. Insert the probe into the center of the thickest part of the food, away from any bone. 4. Close the door and restart the cycle. 5. If the message continues, switch the range's breaker off for one minute and try again.

! Why to stop there
  • If the plug is seated and the message stays, the probe itself or the jack may not be passing a signal, and we test both.
  • A probe is easy to replace when it is the cause.
  • We give a written price before we do anything.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Probe or Insert ProbeProbe or Insert Probe questions
Where does the probe plug in?

The probe jack is inside the oven cavity. Push the plug in all the way. A partly seated plug is the most common reason the control cannot see it.

Can I cook without the probe?

Yes. Cancel the probe cycle and use a timed bake instead, watching the food yourself. The message only matters when you choose a probe-controlled cycle, so ordinary baking is unaffected.

How do I place the probe correctly?

Put it in the center of the thickest part of the food and keep it away from bone. A bad placement can give poor cooking results.
