What Sabbath, Sab, 5Ab or 5A7 means

Sabbath, Sab, 5Ab or 5A7 on a Maytag electric or gas freestanding or slide-in range, such as the MER8650ES, shows that Sabbath Mode is on. In this mode the oven stays on in a Bake setting until you turn it off, and only the Bake cycle works. Other cooking and cleaning cycles are disabled. No tones sound, the display does not show temperature changes, and the oven light and heating do not react to the door. It is a feature, not a failure.

Common causes of Sabbath, Sab, 5Ab or 5A7

  • Sabbath Mode turned on on purpose
  • Mode entered by a long key press by accident
  • Oven that stays in the mode after a power interruption

1. Follow your owner's manual to cancel Sabbath Mode. 2. Turn the oven off and confirm the display returns to normal. 3. If the display does not clear, switch the range's breaker off for one minute. 4. Switch the breaker back on. 5. Start a short bake to confirm the oven works normally.

Is the oven working during Sabbath Mode?

Yes. It stays on in Bake until you turn it off, but it makes no sounds and shows no temperature changes. That is why it can look as though nothing is happening.

Why can't I use Broil or Clean?

Sabbath Mode disables every cycle except Bake, which is part of how the mode is designed. Cancel the mode first, then the other cooking and cleaning cycles become available again.

Is 5Ab a different problem?

No. Sab, 5Ab and 5A7 are display versions of the same Sabbath Mode, depending on the model. Your owner's manual explains how to end it on your range.
