What E21 or E22 means
E21 and E22 on a Maytag over-the-range microwave and hood combination point to the thermal sensor circuit. E21 means the control board saw that circuit as open, and E22 means it saw the circuit as shorted. There may be a problem with the thermal sensor, the appliance control board or the wiring. You will see the code in the display, and the oven function may stop or refuse to start. Microwave-only cooking may still work.
Common causes of E21 or E22
- Thermal sensor in an open or shorted condition
- Wiring or connector in the sensor circuit
- Appliance control board input
1. Switch off the microwave breaker and wait one full minute. 2. Switch it back on. 3. Monitor the microwave for one minute to see whether E21 or E22 returns. 4. Verify the microwave by heating a cup of water for a short time. 5. Keep the vents above and in front free of items.
- Open versus shorted tells us which way the sensor circuit is wrong, but not whether the sensor, the wiring or the board is responsible.
- We test the circuit and the sensor reading before replacing anything.
- You approve a written price first, and older microwaves get an honest repair-or-replace opinion.
Other Microwave codes
What is the difference between E21 and E22?
E21 means the thermal sensor circuit reads open to the control board, and E22 means it reads shorted. Both lead to the same first reset step.
Is it a safety problem?
The code means the microwave cannot trust its temperature reading, so we treat it with care. Stop using the oven function if the code returns.
Does a breaker reset fix it?
It can clear a one-time glitch. If the code comes back, the sensor circuit needs testing, and we will quote the price in writing first.
