What F20 to F31 means
The F20 to F31 range on Maytag Commercial-Grade Residential dryers contains three kinds of message. F20, F22 to F26, F28 and F29 have no stated cause and are handled with a power reset. F30 means restricted airflow, usually a clogged lint screen or a crushed, kinked, or overly long vent, and the dryer keeps running. F31 is a low or no line voltage alert, the same idea as L2, where the home supply stops the heater from turning on. Your display shows the exact number.
Common causes of F20 to F31
- F30: lint screen packed, vent hose crushed, vent run too long
- F31: blown household fuse, tripped breaker, or weak supply to the heater
- F20 to F29: control that needs a reset or has a loose connection
- Outside vent hood blocked with lint
1. For F20 to F29, leave the dryer's breaker(s) off for 5 minutes, switch back on, begin a timed cycle, and watch it for a minute. 2. For F30, empty and clean the lint screen, then look for a kinked hose behind the dryer. 3. For F31, look for a blown household fuse and confirm both poles of the breaker are on. 4. Write down the code if it returns.
- A reset-only code gives us no part to point to, so a repeat tells us the control needs testing
- For F31 the question is whether the supply is wrong or the dryer is wrong, and we measure both
- For F30 we check airflow through the whole vent, since the restriction is often past the part you can reach
Other Commercial Laundry codes
Which of these codes is the most common?
F30 is the one owners often solve themselves, because a clogged screen or vent is easy to find. F31 usually points to the home supply, and the rest depend on a reset.
Why does F31 mean the heater does not come on?
An electric dryer needs full voltage on both legs of its supply. If one leg is low or missing, the drum may turn while the heater stays cold, so clothes take far longer.
Can I clear F30 and keep drying?
You can, but clean the lint screen and vent first. If you ignore it, the restriction can build up and make the dryer run hot and slow.
