What H2O means

H2O on a Maytag built-in dishwasher with electronic control means the dishwasher is not detecting water. It started to fill, did not see water arrive, and stopped. The display may show H2O, and models that blink report the same thing as F8E1. The most likely reasons are on the supply side: a shut valve, or a kinked supply hose. You see an empty tub and a cycle that will not begin.

Common causes of H2O

  • Water supply to the dishwasher turned off
  • Supply hose kinked or squeezed
  • Fill valve not passing water
  • Level sensing not reporting the water
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Make sure the water supply to the dishwasher is on at the shut-off valve. 2. Check the supply hose for kinks. 3. Once the supply is corrected, press Start. 4. The dishwasher will then attempt to fill and resume the cycle.

! Why to stop there
  • With the supply open and the hose clear, a returning H2O points to the fill path
  • We test the fill valve, its screen and the level reading
  • A full supply that still shows H2O sends us to the valve screen and the level reading
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
H2OH2O questions
Does H2O mean the dishwasher is out of water?

It means the dishwasher is not detecting any, which is usually because the supply is shut or the hose is kinked. We start with those two checks.

Why does my friend see F8E1 instead of H2O?

Yes. They are listed together, so some models show the letters and others blink eight and one. The steps above apply to both, and the supply valve and hose are always the first things we look at.

Will it finish the cycle after I fix the supply?

In most cases pressing Start makes it try to fill and carry on with the cycle. If it does not, the fill valve or the level sensing needs testing.
