What C81, C82 or C83 on a Range means
Maytag electric and gas freestanding and slide-in ranges, such as the MER8850DS, show C81, C82 or C83 when the surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff has stepped in. The control cut power to the cooktop on purpose, to protect the range and your cookware. The owner sees the code, finds the surface elements off, and may see the oven shut down as well. If the shutoff keeps returning after the range has cooled, the circuit that watches surface temperature needs a closer look.
Common causes of C81, C82 or C83 on a Range
- Cookware or an empty pan left on a hot surface area
- Heat trapped around the cooktop from poor ventilation or a covered element
- Surface temperature sensing circuit or wiring
- Oven control board making the shutoff decision
1. Turn off the oven if it is running, and turn every surface control off. 2. Wait five minutes so the cooking area can cool. 3. Turn the cooktop back on and verify that it works. 4. If the code returns, switch the range's circuit breaker off for one minute and on again. 5. Monitor the cooktop for one minute. Never leave a hot pan unattended while testing.
- A single overheat from a pan left on too long is normal protection, but a repeat on a cool range suggests a sensing or control problem.
- We measure the surface circuit and inspect the wiring, then give you a written price before any repair.
Other Range codes
Is the shutoff a sign the range is broken?
Not by itself. The automatic shutoff exists to protect the range when the cooking area gets too hot. If it trips again after a cool-down and a short test, the sensing circuit deserves a look.
How long should I wait before using the cooktop again?
Wait about five minutes after turning everything off so the surface can cool, then try the cooktop. Use the range only if the code stays away and nothing smells hot or burning.
What if the code shows up with nothing cooking?
That points away from a pan on the heat and toward the sensing circuit, its wiring or the control. We test those in order and explain what we find before we change any part.
