What Lock on the Cooktop means

The word Lock on the cooktop display of a Maytag electric or gas freestanding or slide-in range, such as the MER8650ES, means the Control Lock is active. It prevents unintended use of the surface cooking areas. If it was set while the cooktop was off, the burners or elements cannot be turned on from the touch controls. If it was set while the cooktop was on, every key except Power and Off is blocked. It is a feature, not a failure.

Why won't the burners turn on?

If Lock is showing, the cooktop is locked out. Hold the LOCK key for three seconds and the burners will accept commands again. The same key engages the lock, so a stray long press while wiping the glass can set it.

Can the lock turn itself on?

Not usually. It is switched on by a key press, sometimes by accident while cleaning. A wet or blocked panel can also confuse it, so wipe the area dry.

What if holding LOCK does nothing?
