What PO means
PO on a Maytag side-by-side refrigerator, such as the MSB26C6MDM, or a French-door bottom-freezer model, such as the MFX2570AEM, stands for Power Outage. The refrigerator shows it when the power was off long enough for the freezer to climb to 18 degrees F (minus 8 C) or higher. The temperature display reads PO, an alert tone sounds three times, and the Confirm light blinks until you acknowledge it by pressing MEASURED FILL under Confirm. The refrigerator itself is not broken.
Common causes of PO
- Power outage or tripped breaker that warmed the freezer
- Unplugged refrigerator or loose plug
- Alert not yet acknowledged
1. Press MEASURED FILL under the blinking Confirm to acknowledge the outage. 2. Check that the refrigerator is plugged in and its breaker is on. 3. Give the refrigerator time to return to normal temperatures. 4. Look at the food in the freezer and refrigerator. 5. Discard anything that thawed and looks or smells wrong.
- If the refrigerator does not recover cold temperatures after the outage, we look at the compressor, fans and control.
- We check the outlet and plug when outages keep repeating.
- Our price is written before work.

Is PO an error code?
It is an information alert about a past power outage, not a failure. Acknowledge it with the Confirm step and the display returns to normal.
Can I refreeze food that thawed?
Use careful judgment. Food that still has ice crystals or stayed cold may be fine, but anything that warmed up or smells off should be thrown away.
PO keeps appearing without an outage. Why?
A loose plug, a tripping breaker or a fluctuating supply can cause short drops. We check the outlet, the plug and the refrigerator's power input, then tell you what we found before any repair is priced.
Still seeing PO?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
