What drn or F9 E1 means

Drn or F9 E1 means a Maytag washer is taking too long to drain, a long-drain alert. It appears on Maytag top-load HE washers such as the MVW6230HW, and on front-load HE washers such as the MHW5630HW. On a top-load, the cause can be a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, which allows siphoning. On a front-load, the drain pump filter or the door seal bellow can be clogged. You see the code on the display and water stays in the drum.

Common causes of drn or F9 E1

  • Drain hose pushed more than about 4.5 inches into the standpipe
  • Drain pump filter clogged (front-load)
  • Door seal or bellow clogged (front-load)
  • Kinked drain hose or drain pump system
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check the drain hose for kinks. 2. Make sure the hose is not more than 4.5 inches (about 113 mm) into the drainpipe or laundry tub. 3. Use the hose form and attach the hose securely, without taping over the drain opening. 4. On a front-load washer, check the drain pump filter and the door seal bellow for lint or debris. 5. Run a short drain and spin.

! Why to stop there
  • If the hose and filter are clear and the code remains, the drain pump or its circuit needs testing.
  • Water can siphon back into the tub, so the plumbing side is checked first.

drn or F9 E1drn or F9 E1 questions
Why would a drain hose that is too long cause F9 E1?

If the hose goes too far into the standpipe, water can siphon back into the tub, which causes slow drain, or poor spin. Keep it within the limit.

Where is the drain pump filter on a front-load?

Its location varies by model, so check your owner's manual before you look. Have towels and a shallow pan ready, since water can spill when you open it.

Is drn the same as F9 E1?

Both refer to the long drain alert. Some top-load displays show drn, and the matching code is F9 E1. The first checks are the same: hose, filter and seal.
