What nF means
nF is a fill-time message on the Maytag Neptune 27-inch front-load washers, the MAH8700A and MAH9700AW series. The washer flags it when it has been filling continuously for 12 minutes, or when the total fill time reaches 14 minutes. Either way, water is taking far too long to reach the level the control is waiting for. Neptunes are an older platform that we still see regularly in Houston, and we repair them when it makes sense.
Common causes of nF
- Water supply restricted by partly closed taps or kinked inlet hoses
- Clogged screens at the inlet hose connections
- The water level sensor not registering the rising water
- The inlet valves, once the supply is confirmed
1. Cancel the cycle and leave the washer idle. 2. Check that both water taps are fully open. 3. Look along both inlet hoses for kinks. 4. With the water off, check the hose screens at the washer for debris. 5. Turn the water on and start a short cycle.
- A slow fill with good supply points to the inlet valves or the level sensing, and the code does not choose between them
- We watch a fill on the washer to see whether the water, the valve or the sensor is the slow part
- You get a price in writing before work, and a frank answer if an older Neptune is not worth it

What is nF on my Neptune?
It is a fill-time message. The washer saw a continuous fill of 12 minutes, or a total fill of 14 minutes, so water is arriving too slowly or the level is not registering.
Will it flood?
Not usually from this alone, but a fill that does not stop is worth watching. If water keeps running, close the taps and call us before using the washer again.
What do I check first?
Taps, hoses and screens. Those cost nothing to look at. If they are fine and nF returns, we test the valves and the level sensing, with a written price first.
Still seeing nF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
