Keeping an Older Maytag Top-Load Washer Running Another Five Years

A few habits protect the parts that wear out first on an older top-loader. Here is the routine we recommend for machines ten years old and up.

An older Maytag top-load washer rarely dies from one bad day. It wears out from loads that are too heavy, hoses left in place too long and small leaks nobody noticed. The habits below cost almost nothing and go after exactly those causes.

Every Month

  • Run an empty hot cycle with a washer cleaner to loosen soap film and mineral buildup.
  • Wipe the lid seal, the dispenser and the rim under the lid.
  • Leave the lid open after the last load so the basket dries out in Houston humidity.

Every Six Months

  • Check that the washer is level by pressing diagonally on the corners of the lid. Any rocking means a foot needs adjusting.
  • Look behind the machine for drips, white crust at hose ends or damp wall board.
  • Pull the machine a few inches forward and inspect the drain hose for kinks.

Replace Hoses on a Schedule

Rubber fill hoses harden and crack, and a burst hose floods a room faster than any other failure. Replacing them every few years costs far less than the water damage. Braided hoses are a good choice, and the old rubber washers at the taps are worth replacing at the same time.

Know the Warning Sounds

A new squeal, a thump during spin or a drum that no longer turns freely are cheap to fix when caught early and expensive when ignored. We repair older machines every week and will tell you plainly when a fix is not worth it.

Do not wash heavy items such as large comforters or rugs in a machine that is already old. They strain the motor, the belt and the suspension far more than regular loads do.

If something has started to sound different, book a visit through Maytag washer repair while the fix is still small. We bring a written price before work begins and back the repair with a 30-day workmanship warranty.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
