MER8700D
Maytag MER8700D Electric Range Repair
Most common issues on this model
- Surface unit that stops heating
- Oven that preheats slowly
- Broil element with a cold stretch
- Panel that lags behind key presses
The MER8700D is an electric range from Maytag that is offered with five endings. Three of them are MER8700DB, MER8700DE and MER8700DH, and the rest vary the finish or revision in similar ways. With that many versions, reading the label before ordering matters.
On a range this size of family we keep the diagnosis orderly. Burners go first, because a surface unit that stops heating is quick to test in another socket. Next comes the oven, where a slow preheat has us look at the bake element, then the sensor, then how well the door seals. A broil element with a cold stretch has usually broken partway along its length. A panel that lags behind key presses is last on the list, and often just needs a connector reseated.
Parts are installed only after a test shows which one failed. You approve a written estimate first, and a month of warranty comes with the repair.

One burner on my MER8700D stopped heating. Where do you begin?
By moving the element to another socket. If it heats there, the socket or switch is the problem. If it does not, the element is replaced. Nothing else is touched.
Why would the broil element be cold in one section?
The element has probably broken along its length, which leaves part of the coil open. A meter test confirms it, and the replacement is straightforward.
Five endings seem like a lot. Do they matter?
They can. Small differences between versions affect switches, sensors and controls, so we copy the full number from the label and compare every part we order to it.
