What F0E5 means

F0E5 means the load is off balance. It appears on Maytag front-load HE washers (MHW models such as the MHW8630HC) and on Maytag top-load HE washers (such as the MVWC565FW), including the older Bravos era. A sizable unbalanced or oversized load forces the washer to reduce its spin speed, so the cycle takes longer than the display first showed and clothes may still drip. If the load is not dripping, the cycle simply took extra time to balance.

Common causes of F0E5

  • Heavy items bunched on one side of the drum
  • A load too large for the basket
  • A balance or spin problem, if even small loads trigger the code
✓ One safe check you can try

1. If the load is not dripping wet, no action is needed. 2. Otherwise, cancel the cycle by pressing Start or unplugging the cord. 3. On a top-loader, run a drain-only cycle if water is present. 4. Redistribute the clothes evenly, take out some if the load is large, and start again.

! Why to stop there
  • A washer that goes off balance with small, even loads needs its suspension and spin checked
  • We look at what the washer does when it ramps up the spin
  • Older Bravos washers are not always worth fixing, and we state that up front
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F0E5F0E5 questions
What does F0E5 mean?

The load is off balance or too large. The washer cut the spin speed to protect itself, so the cycle ran longer and clothes may still be wet at the end.

Do I need to do anything?

If the clothes are not dripping, no. If they are, cancel the cycle, spread the load evenly, remove some if it is a big load, and run the cycle again.

When is it more than a balance issue?

When small, evenly loaded washes still trigger it. Then we check the parts that control the spin. You get a written price first, and our work has a 30-day warranty.
