What oL means
oL means overloaded. On Maytag top-load HE washers with electronic control, such as the MVW6230HW and MVWC565FW, it appears when the load is too large. On the older Bravos MVWB series, such as the MVWB765FW, the washer tries to fill and begin the wash, and if it senses an overload it drains any water and detergent that was added. The Bravos is an older washer, yet many households still use one, and we service it. If a repair would not pay off, we will tell you so.
Common causes of oL
- Too many clothes, or bulky items soaking up water
- Heavy items that make the load unbalanced as well as large
- The load sensing, if a normal load keeps triggering oL
1. Cancel the cycle by pressing the Start button or by disconnecting the power cord. 2. Remove several items from the basket. 3. On a Bravos, add detergent, shut the lid and press START. 4. On other models, run a drain-only cycle if water is present, then restart with a smaller load.
- A small load that still shows oL points to the load sensing instead of the basket
- We check how the washer weighs the load and how it fills
- The price is in writing first, and we tell you plainly if an older Bravos is past saving

What does oL mean?
The load is too large for the washer. It senses the overload and stops, and on a Bravos it drains any water and detergent it had already added.
Do I add detergent again on a Bravos?
Yes. After removing several items, the Bravos instructions say to add detergent, close the lid and press START, because the first dose of water and detergent drained away with the overload.
What if a small load shows oL?
Then the load is not the issue and the sensing needs testing. We quote in writing first, and our repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Still unsure about oL?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
