What Sensing or Fill Light means
The Sensing/Fill light on a Maytag top-load HE washer with electronic control, such as the MVW6230HW or MVWC565FW, comes on when you press Start/Stop with the Water Level knob set to Auto Sensing. The washer fills a little and begins sensing, to work out the load size and balance. Once sensing is complete it fills to the level suited to that load and starts the wash phase. The light is a status indicator and not a warning.
Common causes of Sensing or Fill Light
- Normal Auto Sensing at the start of a cycle
- Little or no water arriving, which keeps the washer in the fill stage
- Water supply lines that are closed or kinked
1. Let the washer finish sensing; it will then fill to the right level. 2. If the Fill light stays on and little or no water is coming in, check your water supply lines. 3. Make sure both taps are fully open. 4. Look for kinked inlet hoses. 5. Restart the cycle.
- A fill light that never moves on with a good supply points to the inlet valves or the level sensing
- We check flow into the tub and how the washer reads the level
- The price is written down first, and we say plainly when an older washer is not worth the repair

Why is the Sensing/Fill light on?
With the Water Level knob on Auto Sensing, the washer fills and senses the load size and balance first. Then it fills to the right level and begins washing.
How long does sensing take?
Long enough to measure the load, then it moves on to the wash phase. If it never moves on and little water comes in, check your water supply lines.
When should I call?
When the light stays on with the taps open and hoses straight. We test the fill and level sensing, quote in writing first, and warrant repairs for 30 days.
