What Sud or Sd means
Sud and Sd are the excess-suds message on Maytag HE washers. On front-loaders such as the MHW5630HW, there are too many suds and the washer cannot spin out the water, so it extends the rinse: it pauses tumbling and adds water so the bubbles can break. On top-loaders such as the MVW6230HW, the washer runs a suds-reduction routine, and you should allow it to continue. On some top-load displays, Sd may look like 5d.
Common causes of Sud or Sd
- More detergent than the load needed
- Detergent that is not made for HE washers, or a very concentrated HE detergent used at a full dose
- Very soft water, which makes any detergent foam more
- Level or suds sensing, if the code appears with little detergent
1. Let the washer continue; the pause and extra rinsing are necessary and may take a while. 2. Do not add more detergent. 3. Next time, follow the detergent maker's directions, because HE detergents come in different concentrations such as 2x, 4x and 8x. 4. Measure the dose instead of pouring by eye.
- Sud with a small measured dose points to the sensing or drain path instead of the detergent
- We check how the washer drains and how it reads foam
- The price is in writing first, and we tell you plainly when an older washer is not worth fixing
Other Washer codes
Are Sud and Sd the same?
Yes. Both mean there are too many suds in the washer. Front-loaders show Sud or Sd, top-loaders the same, and an Sd can even look like 5d.
Why does the washer pause?
The pause allows the bubbles in the suds to break, and the added water rinses them out. It looks like a stall but is part of the correction.
How do I prevent it?
Use HE detergent and measure it to the maker's directions, since 2x, 4x and 8x detergents differ. If Sud returns with a small dose, call us.
