What tE means

tE is a temperature message from the Maytag Neptune 27-inch front-load washers, the MAH8700A and MAH9700AW series. The control sees an abnormal high or low temperature, or an abnormal resistance, at the sump thermistor, the small temperature sensor in the bottom of the tub area. Because the control uses that reading to manage water temperature, a bad reading can interrupt the cycle. Neptunes are an older platform still in many Houston homes, and we repair them.

Common causes of tE

  • The sump thermistor reading out of range
  • Wiring or a connector between the thermistor and the control
  • The control board input, after the sensor tests good
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Cancel the cycle and let the washer rest. 2. Check that both water taps are open and supplying water. 3. Run a short cycle to see whether tE comes back. 4. Do not open the cabinet to reach the sensor.

! Why to stop there
  • An out-of-range reading can come from the sensor, its wiring or the control
  • We measure the sensor's resistance on the washer, which needs it opened up and powered down
  • The price is in writing before work, and we say plainly when an older Neptune is not worth the repair
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
tEtE questions
What is a sump thermistor?

It is a temperature sensor at the bottom of the tub area. tE means its temperature or resistance reading is abnormally high or low, so the control cannot trust the water temperature.

Does tE mean the water is too hot?

Not necessarily. The reading could be abnormal because of the sensor or its wiring, even when the water is normal. That is why it needs testing.

Can a Neptune still be repaired?

Often yes. We test, give a written price first, and say plainly when it is not worth it. Our repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.
