What F4 E4 means

An F4 E4 code on a Maytag Commercial-Grade Residential dryer is a low or no line voltage diagnostic. It suggests a problem with the home power supply that keeps the heater from turning on, so the drum may spin but the air stays cool. Touching any pad clears the code and returns the display to the time remaining. It is the same idea as an L2 code, shown here with the F4 E4 label, and it often traces back to a household fuse or breaker.

Common causes of F4 E4

  • Blown household fuse on one leg of the dryer circuit
  • Breaker tripped or only partly on
  • Loose connection at the dryer's power cord or terminal block
  • Weak supply from the panel
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Touch any pad to clear the code from the display. 2. Check whether a household fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped. 3. Make sure the dryer's breaker is fully on, and reset it if it has tripped. 4. Run a timed dry cycle and check that the air turns warm. 5. If the code comes back, stop using the dryer and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • If the supply checks out at the panel, the cause may be a connection at the dryer or the heater circuit
  • We measure voltage on both legs rather than guessing
  • Problems with the house supply are separate from the dryer, and we tell you plainly when an electrician is the right call
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F4 E4F4 E4 questions
Why does the dryer run but not heat?

An electric dryer needs both legs of a 240-volt supply for the heater. If one leg is missing, the motor can still run, so the drum turns while the air stays cool.

Is F4 E4 the same as L2?

Both describe low or no line voltage keeping the heater off. The label differs by dryer control, but the meaning and the first checks are the same.

Should I reset the breaker more than once?

Resetting the breaker once after a trip is normal. If it trips again or the code comes back, stop resetting it and have both the circuit and the dryer checked, because repeated resets do not fix a real supply problem.
