What d5 / d13 means
The d5 and d13 codes belong to the older Maytag commercial coin and card operated dryers in the MDE/MDG21PD and MLE/MLG23PD families. They mean blocked coin 1 and blocked coin 2 in the coin drop circuit. The control watches an optic sensor in the coin path, and when it sees a blockage for about 8 seconds it posts the code. The dryer may refuse coins or not start a cycle. These machines are older but still in many laundry rooms, and we repair them.
Common causes of d5 / d13
- An object or debris blocking the coin drop sensor
- Wiring between the coin drop and the control
- Optic sensor that is dirty or not reading
- Coin mechanism stuck partway
1. Look into the coin slot for a visible coin, paper, or debris and remove it only if it comes out easily. 2. Do not push tools into the slot. 3. Do not remove any panels. 4. Note which code shows, d5 or d13, and call us so we can test the coin drop circuit.
- d5 and d13 point to the two coin paths, which helps us find the part of the mechanism to test
- We check for a physical blockage first, then the sensor and its wiring
- Coin mechanisms are cheaper to fix than a control board, and we confirm which one it is before you approve any price

What is the difference between d5 and d13?
d5 is blocked coin 1 and d13 is blocked coin 2, so each refers to one coin path in the drop circuit. Tell us which one shows and it saves time on site.
Why does it take a few seconds to show?
The control waits about 8 seconds before it decides the sensor is truly blocked. That delay avoids false alarms from a coin that is simply passing through the slot, so a code on screen means the path stayed blocked.
Is this expensive to fix?
Often it is a blockage or a wiring matter rather than a large repair. We test first and give a written price before work, with a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Still unsure about d5 / d13?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
