What F6E3 means
F6E3 on Maytag built-in dishwashers with electronic control means the dishwasher has sensed excessive suds. When the sensing system detects foam in the bottom of the tub, the dishwasher may not operate properly or may not fill with water. The usual source is the wrong soap: laundry detergent, hand soap or dish detergent made for hand washing. Too much detergent can do the same. You see foam in the tub and a cycle that stops.
Common causes of F6E3
- Wrong type of soap used in the dishwasher
- Too much detergent in the dispenser
- Rinse aid or soap residue left in the tub
- Sensing system, only after suds are ruled out
1. Open the door and look for foam or suds in the bottom of the tub. 2. Remove as much of the suds as you can by hand. 3. Run a clean wash cycle so the foam is flushed out. 4. Use only detergent made for dishwashers, in the amount on its label.
- If F6E3 returns with no suds present, the sensing system needs testing
- We check the sensor and how the dishwasher fills
- A fresh detergent change and a clean cycle usually settle it; if not, the sensor is next

Can dish soap really cause F6E3?
Yes. Soap made for hand washing foams far more than dishwasher detergent, and the dishwasher can sense the foam and stop. Switching to the right detergent is the cure.
How do I get the suds out?
Take out what you can by hand, then run a clean cycle. Several cycles may be needed on a heavy foam, since each one flushes some of it away.
What if there are no suds but the code stays?
Then the sensing system may be reporting something that is not there. That is when we test the suds sensor and the control, and we also check how the dishwasher fills and drains.
