What F9E2 means
F9E2 on Maytag built-in dishwashers with electronic control is a drain motor error. The drain motor moves used water out of the tub, and the control is reporting a problem with how that motor runs. It blinks as nine flashes, a pause, and two flashes. A kinked or clogged drain hose can lead to poor drainage or no drain at all, so those outside causes are looked at before the motor. You may find standing water and a stalled cycle.
Common causes of F9E2
- Drain hose kinked, clogged or routed incorrectly
- Garbage disposer blocked, or its knockout plug not removed on a new installation
- Drain motor or its connection
- Control driving the drain motor
1. Make sure the garbage disposer knockout plug has been removed if the dishwasher is new. 2. Check the disposer and drain for clogs. 3. Straighten the drain hose if it is kinked, and confirm it is routed correctly and inside the frame. 4. Cycle power, then run a short cycle.
- If the hose and disposer are clear and F9E2 returns, the motor circuit needs testing
- We check drain flow, the motor and its wiring
- The motor, its wiring and the hose are tested in order, so you are not charged for the wrong part

How is F9E2 different from F9E1?
F9E1 says draining takes too long. F9E2 reports an error with the drain motor, so after the hose and disposer are cleared we look at the motor itself.
Can a kinked hose really trigger this?
Yes. A kinked or clogged hose can cause poor drainage or no drain, and the control may react with the motor code. Straightening it is a quick check.
Should I bail out standing water?
You can scoop it out to protect the floor and the filter area. Keep the dishwasher off until we have found why it is not draining.
