What Sanitize light flashing means
A flashing Sanitize light, also called the Sani LED, on a Maytag built-in dishwasher with electronic control means the dishwasher detected that the temperature requirement for sanitizing was not met. It is a clear sign the dishes were not sanitized, so treat that load as unsanitized. Low incoming water temperature is a leading reason, and an interrupted cycle can also do it. The dishwasher usually still washes normally.
Common causes of Sanitize light flashing
- Hot water at the sink below the required temperature
- Cycle interrupted by the door opening or a power loss
- Heating circuit not reaching the target
- Temperature sensor reading
1. Run the hot water at the kitchen sink for about 30 seconds and check that it is hot, at least 120 degrees F (49 degrees C) per the owner's manual. 2. If the water is too cool, have the water heater setting checked. 3. Avoid opening the door during the cycle. 4. Rerun the load on a sanitizing cycle.
- If the water is hot and the light still flashes, the heating circuit or sensor needs testing
- We measure what temperature the dishwasher actually reaches
- We also confirm how hot the water actually gets inside the tub during the sanitize stage

Are my dishes safe to use?
The flashing light indicates the dishes were not sanitized. Rewash them on a sanitizing cycle once the water is hot enough, if sanitizing matters for that load.
Why does the light flash when the cycle looks normal?
The dishwasher checks temperature during the sanitize stage. A normal-looking cycle can still miss the target if the water starts out too cool or the cycle is interrupted.
Does a flashing Sani light mean the heater is broken?
Not necessarily. Cool supply water or an opened door is more common. If those are cleared and it repeats, we test the heating circuit and the temperature sensor.
