What F8E1 (blink pattern 8-1) means

F8E1 on Maytag built-in dishwashers with electronic control means the dishwasher is not detecting water. The same condition appears as H2O on the display, and as eight flashes, a pause, and one flash on models that blink. In practice the dishwasher is starting a fill and not seeing water arrive, so the cycle will not go ahead. A closed supply valve or a kinked supply line is the easiest explanation.

Common causes of F8E1 (blink pattern 8-1)

  • Water supply valve closed or partly closed
  • Kinked or squeezed supply hose
  • Fill valve not letting water through
  • Sensing of water level in the tub
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Make sure the water supply to the dishwasher is turned on. 2. Check that the supply hose has no kinks. 3. Once the supply is corrected, press Start and the dishwasher will attempt to fill and resume the cycle.

! Why to stop there
  • If water is available and F8E1 returns, the fill path or sensing needs testing
  • We check the valve, the screen and the water level reading
  • Water at the valve but none in the tub means the fill path, which we test step by step
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F8E1 (blink pattern 8-1)F8E1 (blink pattern 8-1) questions
Is the H2O message another way of showing F8E1?

Yes, the manufacturer groups them together. Some models show H2O while others blink 8-1, but both mean the dishwasher is not detecting water, and the first checks at the supply valve and hose are identical.

Where is the supply valve?

It is usually under the sink, on the line feeding the dishwasher. Check that the handle lines up with the pipe, which is the open position on most valves.

What if water is on and nothing changes?

Then the dishwasher may not be detecting water that is there. We test the fill valve and the level reading to find which one is not responding.
