What Probe or Insert Probe on a Wall Oven means
Probe or Insert Probe on a Maytag built-in wall oven means the control is looking for a signal from the meat probe and not finding one. This happens when you start a probe cycle without the probe fully seated in its jack, or without the probe in the food. Check the plug is pushed in all the way, and insert the probe into the center of the thickest part of the food. With bone-in meat, keep the tip away from the bone, as that can give poor results.
Common causes of Probe or Insert Probe on a Wall Oven
- Probe not fully seated in the jack
- Probe not inserted in the food
- Probe cord or tip damaged
1. Push the probe plug firmly into the jack. 2. Insert the probe into the center of the thickest part of the food. 3. Keep the tip away from bone if cooking bone-in meat. 4. Start the probe cycle again.
- If the message returns with the probe seated, the jack or its wiring may be the problem
- A worn probe can mimic a bad jack, so we test both
- Expect a written quote before any work, then a 30-day warranty on the labor we do

Why does my oven ask for the probe?
The probe cycle needs a signal from the probe, and without one the control prompts you. Seat the plug fully in its jack, and place the probe tip in the food.
Does it matter where the probe goes in the meat?
Yes. Aim for the center of the thickest or fleshiest part of the food. A tip too close to bone may give unfavorable cooking results, so keep it clear of bone.
The jack looks fine but the oven still prompts me.
The probe cord or the jack wiring may be worn, which a quick look cannot show. We test both parts of the circuit and tell you which one needs work before we quote.
