What F6 means

F6 on a Maytag over-the-range microwave means the oven could not carry out the function you asked for. The manufacturer ties this to the relay control board or the wiring around it. You will see F6 in the display, and the microwave may do nothing when you press Start, or stop partway through. It can show up on older microwaves that still work well otherwise.

Common causes of F6

  • The relay control board that switches the oven's loads
  • Wiring and plug connections to that board
  • Control response after power events
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the microwave's circuit breaker off for one minute. 2. Turn the breaker on again. 3. Wait one minute and make sure F6 does not return. 4. Run a short cycle with a cup of water to check normal heating. 5. Note whether F6 comes back during a specific function.

! Why to stop there
  • A one-minute reset does not tell us whether the board or its wiring is responsible
  • We check the board outputs and connectors before any part is quoted
  • Written price before work, and our repairs carry a 30-day warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F6F6 questions
What does the relay control board do?

It switches the microwave's heating and fan circuits on and off on command from the main control. F6 means a requested function did not happen, so we check that switching path.

Is it okay to try Start again and again?

Once or twice after the breaker reset is fine. Repeated attempts do not fix a wiring or board problem, so stop if F6 keeps returning and let us test.

Will you repair an old over-the-range Maytag showing F6?

Yes, we repair these regularly. We give you the cost in writing first and tell you directly if a repair is not worth it.
