What LOC, L or Padlock Icon means
LOC, a lone L or a padlock icon in the display means the Control Lock is switched on. This applies to Maytag countertop microwaves and to over-the-range models. The lock keeps the keypad from accepting presses, so it can look like a dead control. Depending on the model, you hold Cancel for three seconds or Start for five seconds. Some countertop models also have a two-step door opening that stops unintended access.
Common causes of LOC, L or Padlock Icon
- Control Lock turned on by a press and hold
- The two-step door-opening feature on some countertop models
- Keypad not responding for another reason if the lock will not clear
1. Press and hold the Cancel key for three seconds. 2. If that does nothing, press and hold the Start key for five seconds instead, since the method depends on the model. 3. Check the display to see that LOC, L or the padlock is gone. 4. Look at the owner's manual for your model's exact steps.
- If the lock will not clear after the right steps, the keypad or control may not be responding
- We test the keypad and control before suggesting a part
- Price is written down first, and our repairs have a 30-day warranty

Why did my microwave lock by itself?
Pressing and holding a key for a few seconds turns the lock on, so it can happen when a child or a cleaning cloth holds a button. Use the hold method for your model to switch it off.
The padlock will not go away. What next?
Try both methods, three seconds on Cancel and five on Start, because models differ. If it still sticks, the keypad may need a test and we can check it.
Is the Control Lock the same on countertop and over-the-range models?
The idea is the same, though the exact hold times differ by model. Your owner's manual lists the method for yours.
