What F6E4 means

F6E4 on a Maytag built-in dishwasher with electronic control points to the water float switch, the overfill protection that watches the water level in the tub. Incorrect leveling of the dishwasher can actuate the overfill or float switch, so a dishwasher that sits crooked in its cabinet can trip the code on its own. You may see six flashes, a pause, and four flashes, water that stops filling, or a cycle that will not continue.

Common causes of F6E4

  • Dishwasher not level in its opening
  • Float switch lifted or stuck
  • Connection to the float switch
  • Control, after the switch tests good
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the door and check that nothing, such as a loose dish, is blocking the float. 2. Check that the dishwasher sits level front to back and side to side. 3. If hard wired, turn the breaker off for 30 seconds; otherwise unplug it for 30 seconds. 4. Restore power and try a cycle.

! Why to stop there
  • Leveling is the first thing we check, since it can trip the switch without any part failing
  • If F6E4 stays, we test the switch and its wiring
  • We level the dishwasher and watch the float respond before we blame the switch
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F6E4F6E4 questions
Why would leveling matter?

If the dishwasher tilts, the float can rise or catch as if the tub were overfull. The control then reports F6E4 even though the water level is normal.

Is a float switch problem a leak?

Not by itself. It reports water level. We still look for leaks when we test, because the same code can accompany real overfilling, and we want that ruled out before we leave.

Can I adjust the leveling myself?

If you are comfortable with it, the feet can be adjusted. We can also level it during the visit and check the float while we are there.
