What E03 means

E03 on a Maytag over-the-range microwave and hood combination means the keypad, also called the user interface, reported a problem to the control board. There may be a problem with the keypad itself or with its wiring. You will see E03 in the display, and the microwave may ignore button presses, refuse to start, or stop partway through. We repair these hood microwaves, including older ones that have been in kitchens for many years.

Common causes of E03

  • Keypad or user interface sending a bad signal
  • Wiring or ribbon connection between the keypad and the control board
  • Control board input for the keypad
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the microwave circuit breaker off and leave it off for one full minute. 2. Switch it back on. 3. Watch the microwave for one minute and see whether E03 returns. 4. Check that the microwave works, for example by heating a cup of water briefly. 5. Wipe the keypad with a dry cloth.

! Why to stop there
  • E03 can come from the keypad, its wiring or the control, and the display does not say which.
  • We test the keypad response and the connection before replacing a part.
  • The price is written and approved by you first, and we are honest when an older microwave is not worth the repair.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E03E03 questions
What does E03 mean?

It means the keypad reported a problem to the control board. The cause could be the keypad itself, its wiring or the board, and a test tells them apart.

Can I still use the microwave?

If a breaker reset clears the code and the microwave heats normally, yes. If E03 returns or the keys do not respond, stop and call us.

Is it worth repairing an older over-the-range microwave?

Sometimes. We give you the written price first and say plainly if replacing the microwave would be the smarter move, so the decision is yours.
