What E61, E62 or E63 means
E61, E62 and E63 on a Maytag over-the-range microwave and hood combination refer to the oven sensor circuit. E61 means the control board saw the circuit as open, while E62 and E63 mean it saw the circuit as shorted. There may be a problem with the sensor, the appliance control board or the wiring. You will see the code in the display, and the oven function may stop. Microwave-only cooking may still work.
Common causes of E61, E62 or E63
- Oven sensor in an open or shorted condition
- Wiring or connector in the sensor circuit
- Appliance control board input
1. Turn off the microwave breaker for a full minute. 2. Turn it back on. 3. Monitor the microwave for one minute to see whether E61, E62 or E63 returns. 4. Verify operation by heating a cup of water for a short time. 5. Keep the front and top vents clear.
- The code tells us the sensor circuit is open or shorted, not whether the sensor, wiring or board is the cause.
- We test the circuit before replacing anything.
- You see a written price first, and we say plainly when an older microwave is not worth the repair.
Other Microwave codes
Are E61, E62 and E63 the same?
They belong to the same circuit. E61 reads open, while E62 and E63 read shorted. Our checks and the owner reset step are the same for all three codes.
Is E61 worse than E62?
Not necessarily. Open and shorted are simply two ways the circuit can read wrong. Each one needs a hands-on test to find the actual cause.
Can I keep using the microwave?
For microwave-only cooking after a reset, often yes. If the oven function stops working or the code returns, call us for a check and a written price.
Still seeing E61, E62 or E63?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
