What dc means
The dc code on a Maytag Neptune 27-inch front-load washer, the MAH8700A and MAH9700AW families built around 2005 to 2006, tells you the drum never got past 400 rpm because the load was out of balance. The control holds the spin down to protect the machine, so clothes come out wetter than normal and the washer may shake or thump. These are older Neptune models that are still in many homes. You see dc on the display near the end of a wash.
Common causes of dc
- Unbalanced or oversized load
- Washer not sitting level on the floor
- Drum support parts that no longer damp the movement
1. Stop the washer and open the door once the drum has stopped. 2. Spread the clothes loosely around the drum. 3. Take out very heavy or bulky items, or add a few light items to balance a single heavy one. 4. Run a drain and spin. 5. If dc returns with a small, even load, check that the washer sits level and call us.
- If dc repeats with an even load on a level floor, the drum supports or the motor drive need checking.
- Worn supports are a normal result of age on these older washers.
- We tell you plainly if a repair is not worth it, and quote in writing first.

Is dc a serious problem?
Often it is just an uneven load. Rebalance the clothes and try again. If it keeps happening with small, even loads, the drum supports or the drive may be worn.
Why are my clothes still wet?
The washer limited the spin because the load was unbalanced, so less water was removed. Rearranging the load and running another spin usually helps a great deal.
Can an uneven floor cause it?
Yes. A washer that rocks on an uneven floor struggles to spin evenly. Check that all feet touch the floor and the machine does not wobble.
Still seeing dc?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
